Pillowcase Dress Tutorial

My daughter has really been deprived thus far in life by not owning a pillowcase dress. But I remedied this problem last night. While searching for Easter Dresses (which by the way is SO much more exciting, and expensive, than searching for Easter Ties) I came across some pillowcase dresses for the umpteenth time. Not surprising since they are everywhere these days. Well, the Easter Dress definitely needs to be much more poofy than a pillowcase dress, but still the girl needs a pillowcase dress.

So I figured it was time I finally made one so I stood up and walked over to my scrap fabric. One hour later I was showing this beauty to my husband…

(the dress, not the baby…she had been peacefully sleeping for many hours by this time).

I used Alexander Henry’s Apple Pear and Michael Miller’s Dumb Dot in Pink and it turned out perfect! The next one should come out in about 30 minutes as I measured the sleeping babe and various pieces of her wardrobe as well as setting up a custom listing and answering a convo on etsy during the hour.

Make Your Own!

My baby is wearing size 18 month, so make modifications according to your daughter’s size.

**Cut two pieces of fabric 13″ x 14″ (this is the main body)
**Cut two pieces of fabric 3″ x 14″ (this is your bottom border)
**Sew border to main body
**Right sides together sew two pieces together, turn right side out
**Cut arm holes..for mine I went about 3 inches in and 5 inches down. Then just drew a curved line and cut.
**Sew binding along arm hole edges (I made my own binding w/fabric to match the bottom, but you can also purchase some)
**Fold top over about an inch and sew down, this will create a casing for your ties.
**Sew ties by cutting about 2.5″ x 30″ stripes, fold over ends and sew down the length
**Slide ties through casing and your dress is complete! (You can sew the ties in place and bunch up the front casing a little if you want!)

Finished measurements are about 12″ wide and 17″ from neckline to bottom. Make a shorter one for a shirt…or keep on wearing this one until it is a shirt!

Enjoy!

This looks really easy! Who knows? Maybe I’ll decide to make Steph super stylish and zip one out for her someday… Thanks for including instructions! =)
